Job Description: Omidyar Network Communications Fellows

Omidyar Network (ON) is seeking people who are passionate about campaigns, communications, and policies aimed at building an inclusive economy. We are looking for people with 2 to 4 years of communications and campaign experience to join the inaugural class of Omidyar Network Communications Fellows.

The Omidyar Network Communications Fellows Program plans to place progressive-minded communications campaigners in a 12 – to 15 – month position with organizations working on a referendum, ballot initiative, or other issue-based campaign related to creating an equitable economy. This is a full-time, paid position.

Position Description:

To create an equitable economy, we must change the rules of the game, balance the scales of power, and look at the structural issues that led to an economy set up to value a wealthy few over the masses. The 2020 election gives us an opportunity to change how people think about the economy—but, to succeed, organizations and campaigns working on this critical issue need more communications support.

Omidyar Network is looking for progressive-minded campaigners and communicators interested in honing their skills while supporting grassroots campaigns aimed at creating structural economic change. The ideal Omidyar Network Communications Fellow has 2 to 4 years of professional experience supporting a policy campaign as part of a communications team. We’re looking for strong writers with solid social media skills, an understanding of local politics, and the flexibility to jump in on a fast-paced campaign and immediately become an indispensable part of the team.

ON Communications Fellows will start their fellowship with a virtual communications training this Spring (late April or early May 2020, exact date TBD) where they will hone their communications skills as they get up to speed on their assigned campaign.

All positions are currently remote due to the coronavirus outbreak. Fellows must have internet access and an ability to work from their present location. The campaigns will provide laptops as needed. When the campaigns resume in-person activities, Fellows will be housed at an office in the cities noted.

This is a full-time, salaried position that includes health care and other benefits. Fellows will work in a campaign office and must be able to commit to a 12 – to 15 – month assignment.

As an Omidyar Network Communications Fellow, you will benefit from:

  • A virtual communications training with experts from the field who will help you sharpen media relations, messaging, research, digital outreach, and other communications skills.
  • An opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment where you’ll learn the ins and outs of a policy campaign while continuing to strengthen your communications skills.
  • Support, coaching, and ongoing training from an ON project manager who will help you navigate a successful fellowship. Your ON project manager will conduct regular check-in calls with you and your supervisor to ensure everything is running smoothly. ON will also share resources and lead additional training webinars to continue building your skills.
  • Peer support through the Omidyar Network Communications Fellows network.
  • A full-time salary and benefits, including health care.

  • Staffing campaign events;
  • Tracking media coverage and identifying rapid response opportunities;

Qualifications:

In addition to 2 to 4 years of professional experience supporting a campaign as part of a communications team, a successful candidate understands grassroots organizing and deeply values the goal of changing the economic paradigm and building worker power.
